I am a qualified art psychotherapist and counselling psychologist, offering individual therapy to adults, young people and children. For the last 10 years I have gained significant experience working therapeutically with people from different ages and backgrounds, aiming to provide them with a supportive space where they can create meaning, find relief and empower themselves. I also offer clinical supervision to practitioners working individually with children and adults.

I believe that as life happens there are moments of ups and downs. I believe that everyone deserves a holding hand, a smile and a caring gesture. I believe in feeling, reflecting, thinking, expressing and transforming. I believe that “you are not what happened to you; you are what you choose to become” (C. G. Jung).

Arts therapy with Catarina

In my therapy sessions I integrate both my knowledge of psychology and art psychotherapy in order to best support you according to your needs and preferred form of expression. I offer you a professional therapeutic relationship of trust, empathy and respect, where you can bring issues that concern you and thus make sense of them in order to find inner balance and peace in your life. You can talk about what worries you and/or express yourself in creative ways.

In order for you to get the most out of therapy, it is important that we develop a collaborative working relationship in which you feel safe and to which you are committed. I do not see my work as one of fixing people’s problems and I rather facilitate your journey and development through a joint creative process. At all times you are in control and in each session we will work with what is relevant for you at that particular time. In art therapy art is not used as diagnostic tool but as a medium to address emotional issues which may be confusing and distressing (BAAT).

The use of creative mediums enables clients to communicate and express themselves, which might include feelings or experiences that are hard to put into words. I offer talking sessions as well. Depending on what you want to achieve, I may suggest particular exercises that may be helpful in allowing you to explore and process something, such as guided visualisations, role-plays, relaxations, and cognitive-behavioural strategies that may benefit you in developing awareness of thinking-feeling-behaving patterns and in changing these to more helpful ones.

I’m trained to work with symbols, metaphors and images as manifestations and communications of the unconscious – the layer of the human mind, where attitudes, beliefs and ideologies normally hidden from consciousness, are stored. The exploration of these in therapy may help you find a balance and heal. At times, it may also be important to work with the relational dynamics that emerge between us and to look at the past, in order to help you in your present process. All work is strictly confidential.

Qualifications and experience

  • MA in Art Psychotherapy, University of Roehampton, London
  • PgDip in Expressive Techniques and Methodologies in Education, Instituto Superior de Linguas e Administracao, Lisbon, Portugal
  • MA in Psychology (Clinical and Health Psychology – Nucleus of Cognitive-Behavioural and Integrative Psychotherapies), Faculty of Psychology of the University of Lisbon, Portugal

In parallel to my private practice, I work in the charity sector as a child arts therapist and as a group facilitator. Previous work include: therapeutic services of primary schools, community children centres, hospital-based cancer care charity, higher education, supervision and tutoring of in-training child therapists.

My fees are £65 per session. I offer concessions to trainee therapists, depending on availability.

I also offer clinical supervision to in-training and qualified therapists and counsellors who work with adults and children. I have a rate of £50 per supervision session.
