You may have decided you would like to talk to someone but searching for a therapist can feel daunting. People seek support for many different reasons. You may have experienced long term depression or anxiety or have only recently begun to feel overwhelmed by feelings arising from relationships or work. A seemingly unrelated event may have reignited past emotions or you’re struggling to cope following bereavement or other loss. You may be navigating change or wrestling with an important decision and need a place to ‘think out loud’. Alternatively, you may simply wish to experience a greater depth and meaning in your life and relationships.
I am a psychotherapist and counsellor, working with a wide variety of clients in private practice, specialist services and the NHS and I am committed to continuing professional development. I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and a member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy and I abide by their Codes of Ethics.
Integrative counselling and psychotherapy with Catherine
My approach is integrative which simply means I combine a variety of theoretical approaches which explore development and emotions, whilst acknowledging the importance of our earliest relationships and how the sense of ourselves which is internalised and carried forward into adult life, may no longer be helpful. I see therapy as an opportunity to explore your potential for flexibility and change and begin to feel able to make choices about the future. I offer short-term therapy in which we can focus on a current dilemma and work towards specific goals. Alternatively, longer-term work would allow exploration of past experiences in more depth – helping you to gain understanding and insight into your individual experience.
I believe the most important element in life is our relationship with both ourselves and others. Difficulties arise from rupture or disconnection in the past or present. Therefore, it’s essential that any therapeutic relationship offers an opportunity to experience trust and acceptance. I don’t believe there’s a general template for how each individual is supposed to be and I aim to provide warmth, understanding and acceptance, enabling you to hear your own voice, perhaps for the first time.
